A Field Guide to the Modern Newsroom

The newsroom of 2026 looks nothing like the newsroom of 2016, and a great deal like the newsroom of 1956 — except the typewriters are Substacks and the printing press is a CDN.

Small is the new big

Two-person publications are out-reporting twenty-person ones. Not always. But often enough that the org chart is no longer the moat.

The byline is the brand. Always was. We just forgot for a while.

Where the money comes from

  1. Readers, paying directly. Boring, sustainable, and finally fashionable.
  2. Events. The article is the trailer; the room is the film.
  3. Syndication into the small-but-loyal newsletters of other writers.

The death of journalism was greatly exaggerated. The death of a particular business model for journalism was not.
